ManyChat pricing explained: why the bill grows when your work does not

Most people who search for ManyChat pricing are not really asking what the plans cost. They are asking a different question: why is my bill bigger this month when I did not do anything differently?

The answer is in the billing unit. ManyChat does not charge for messages sent, flows built, or hours saved. It charges for active contacts. Understand that one number and the whole pricing page becomes readable.

What an “active contact” is

An active contact is anyone who has interacted with your automation. Someone comments your keyword once, gets a DM, never engages again — they are now a contact on your account, and they count.

Two properties of this number matter more than the price per tier:

  1. It accumulates. Contacts do not fall off at the end of the month. Your count is a high-water mark of everyone your automation has ever touched.
  2. It rises fastest when you succeed. A post that performs well adds hundreds of contacts in a day. The reward for a good campaign is a larger bill next cycle.

That is the mechanic people find surprising. Your effort is flat. Your cost is not.

The tier structure changed in March 2026

On 2 March 2026, ManyChat replaced its older Free/Pro structure with a four-tier model: Essential, Pro, Business, and Advanced. The free plan was cut down substantially at the same time.

Be careful with the numbers you find in blog posts about this, including the ones ranking above this page. Published figures for the new tiers disagree with each other, the tiers are partly exposed through a contact-count calculator rather than a flat table, and some accounts were grandfathered onto old pricing. Third-party sources also quote conflicting overage rates.

Check the calculator on ManyChat’s own pricing page at your actual contact count before you commit to anything. That is the only figure that applies to you.

What is not in dispute is the shape:

  • Price steps up as contact count crosses each tier boundary.
  • Exceeding your tier’s included contacts triggers a per-contact overage charge.
  • The AI features sit on the higher tiers, not the entry tier.

The three costs people forget

WhatsApp is billed separately. Meta charges its own per-conversation fee for WhatsApp Business messaging. That is passed to you on top of the subscription, and it is not part of the plan price.

Contact count survives your cleanup. Pruning a flow does not prune the contacts it generated. Reducing your bill means reducing contacts, which is a separate and deliberate exercise.

The entry tier is a demo, not a plan. A free tier measured in tens of contacts is enough to test a flow. It is not enough to run one. Budget for the paid tier from the start.

How to work out your real cost

Do this before you compare any two tools:

  1. Look at your last three months of Instagram comment volume on posts with a call to action.
  2. Assume each unique commenter becomes a contact. That is your monthly contact growth.
  3. Project it twelve months out. That is the tier you will actually be on next year, not the one you sign up for.
  4. Price that tier. Add WhatsApp conversation fees if you use WhatsApp.

Most people find the answer is one or two tiers above where they expected.

What to look for in an alternative

Contact-based pricing is not a scam — it correlates with the value the platform delivers, and it is the industry norm. But it suits some businesses badly. If your audience is large and your automation is simple, you are paying for audience size to run a handful of rules.

When comparing, ask three questions:

  • What is the billing unit? Contacts, messages, seats, or a flat fee. This determines whether growth is rewarded or taxed.
  • Does the count reset? A monthly-active count behaves very differently to a cumulative one.
  • Where do the features you need actually sit? Entry tiers often exclude the one capability that made you sign up.

DMParrot answers the first question with flat monthly tiers by contact ceiling — $19 for 1,000 contacts, $49 for 10,000, $149 for 50,000 — with no per-message or per-overage charge inside a tier. You can see the full pricing here. The trade is different, not free: DMParrot has no drag-and-drop canvas, because your AI agent builds the funnel through MCP tools instead.

If a visual builder is the reason you use ManyChat, keep using ManyChat. If you were only ever using the canvas because there was no other way to describe what you wanted, that is the part DMParrot removes.
