Instagram DM automation

They comment. They get the DM. You built nothing.

DMParrot runs Instagram comment-to-DM automation on Meta’s official messaging API. The part that is different: you describe the funnel to your AI assistant instead of assembling it in a flow builder.

What you can automate

  • Comment keyword

Someone comments your keyword on a post and gets a private-reply DM. Target every post or one specific post.

  • DM keyword

Someone sends a keyword straight to your inbox and gets an automatic reply.

  • Story reply

A reply to your story opens a DM conversation.

  • New follower

    A first-time contact receives a welcome message.

  • Referral link click

Someone arrives from a tagged link and enters the matching flow.

Each one can add tags, set custom fields, wait, branch on a condition, call a webhook, or hand off to a human. Tagged contacts can then receive broadcasts inside Meta’s 24-hour window. See every tool.

Setting it up

  1. 01

    Connect Instagram

You need an Instagram professional account linked to a Facebook Page. Connect it through Meta OAuth from the dashboard.

  2. 02

Point your agent at the MCP server

Add https://dmparrot.com/mcp to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any MCP client. Sign in once with OAuth — no API key.

  3. 03

    Describe the automation

Say what you want in a sentence. Your agent calls the tools, builds the flow, and can dry-run it before anything goes live.

  4. 04

    Publish and watch the log

A deterministic engine sends the DMs — no AI in the send path. The delivery log shows every send and its outcome.

The full walkthrough, including what to check before you publish, is in how to set up comment-to-DM automation with Claude.

Questions

Is Instagram DM automation against the rules?
No, provided it runs on Meta’s official Instagram messaging API rather than by scripting the app. DMParrot uses the official API. The rules that apply are Meta’s: one private reply per comment, and no promotional messages outside the 24-hour window after a person contacts you. Tools that automate the Instagram app itself risk the account; that is a different thing entirely.
What is the 24-hour window?
After someone messages you, you have 24 hours to reply freely. Outside it, promotional messages are not permitted. This is why a broadcast reaches fewer people than your tag count suggests — DMParrot filters to the eligible audience automatically rather than letting a send fail.
Do I need a business account?
You need an Instagram professional account — Creator or Business — linked to a Facebook Page. Personal accounts cannot use the messaging API at all. Switching is free and takes about a minute in Instagram settings.
Can I automate DMs without any coding?
Yes. You describe the automation in plain English to an AI assistant and it builds it. You never see code and you never open a flow builder. What you do need is an AI client that supports MCP, such as Claude Desktop or ChatGPT with connectors.
Will the automated DMs sound robotic?
They say exactly what you wrote, every time. DMParrot does not generate message text at send time — you or your agent write the copy when building the flow, and that is what goes out. This is deliberate: predictable beats clever for anything sent under your name.
How is this different from ManyChat or other Instagram automation tools?
The automations are largely the same. The difference is who builds them: DMParrot has no visual canvas, because an AI agent creates the flows through MCP tools instead. It is also Instagram-only, where most competitors cover several channels. See the full comparison on our ManyChat alternative page.
